Full Description: The Wylye valley around Wylye Wood is characterised by open rolling pasture and woodland. Wylye wood has been named after the river Wylye which is a tributary of the Avon and is an unusual chalk bed river system that supports a unique bio diversity. The natural filtration of the aquifers produce ideal conditions for grayling and brown trout.
Wylye Wood provides a haven for wildlife near to the A36: including Roe deer and Badgers and there is an interesting mix of coniferous and broadleaf tree types including some particularly fine beech specimens. An open clearing within the wood provides further diversity of habitat amongst dense ferns for ground nesting birds and rodents.
The nearby historic market town of Warminster just a couple of miles away boasts a proud merchant and military history having originally expanded in the middle ages with the wool and cloth trade and as an important corn market. Many of the original buildings are still in evidence in the town. Latterly a strong military connection dating back from the civil war has continued due largely to its proximity to MOD facilities around Salisbury plain.
The natural beauty of the area and its accessibility has given rise to a flourishing tourism economy in the immediate area, centred around the Longleat Estate and Centre Parcs.
