This collection of young woodlands established with broadleaves in 1992-2004 and a good mid-rotation poplar plantation offer opportunities for timber production, leisure and Inheritance Tax mitigation. Lots 1, 2 and 3 have substantial annual payments under the Farm Woodland Premium Scheme which may be taken as income by the purchasers.
LOT 1 ANCHOLME WOOD 17.8 acres (7.21 hectares). The wood is bordered by the New River Ancholme on its west boundary and the Old River Ancholme on the south east side. Both rivers are favourite local boating and fishing venues. The woodland owner could therefore launch a boat and enjoy the facilities. Points A B and C are marked for ease of identification.
In 1999 a mixture of sycamore and poplar was planted which are developing well on this moist, fertile site. The edge of the wood was planted with common alder, grey alder, willow, black poplar, aspen, dogwood and guelder rose. Timber will be produced from the main species in the long term but the main objectives of the owner are nature conservation and leisure. The wood incorporates small areas of unplanted ground now rich in plant and insect associations.
The woodland was entered into the Community Woodland Scheme for 10 years from 1999, with the agreement finishing in 2009. Annual payments of £2,163 per annum are available for the new owner until 2014 under the Farm Woodland Premium Scheme.

LOT 2 CADNEY WOOD WEST 25.2 acres (10.21 hectares). From Lot 1 return to the centre of Brigg and follow the main road east, with Tesco on the right. At the next roundabout take the minor road to Cadney. In Cadney turn right (west) into Bridge Lane and after ½ mile the wood is on the right, with a right of way shown A-B on the plan. The owner planted this area of level, highly fertile and moist land in 2004 with an intimate mix of ash, sycamore, poplar and walnut, now establishing well. There is an unplanted area beneath the pylons which would lend itself to growing a cash crop of Christmas trees or groups of shrubs for environmental reasons.
£3,051 per annum is available to the new owner until 2019 under the Farm Woodland Premium Scheme. The second instalment of planting grant has been paid.

LOT 3 CADNEY WOOD EAST 102.7 acres (41.56 hectares). From Lot 2 return to Cadney and follow the main street for a short distance. Immediately after a red brick farm building there is a good, surfaced track on the right running south to the wood and marked C D and E on the sale plan. LOT 4 HOOKS WOOD 84.0 acres (34.0 hectares). North Owersby is 8 miles south of Cadney. Follow the minor road east from Cadney and turn right at the T junction signed Howsham. After 1 mile bear right signed North Kelsey. Continue on the minor roadsouth through North Kelsey, South Kelsey and Thornton-le-Moor into North Owersby. Take the right turn signed to Glentham in the village and after 1 mile bear right into the No Through Road. Hooks Wood, with its prominent poplars, is then on the right after a short distance. Two varieties of poplar were planted here in 1992 by the present owner, ie Beaupre and Beolare. Spacing was 3.0m and the trees have received one thinning. They are now ready to thin again to leave them at final crop spacing ready for clearfelling in approximately 15 years. The wood is therefore a good Inheritance Tax hold on that approximate timescale.
The land is level, fertile and moist, ideal for poplar growing, and the evidence for that can be seen in the present crop. This is an impressive wood, at 84 acres (34 hectares) quite large by Lincolnshire standards. When the time comes to fell the poplar they should yield approximately 400-450m3/hectare at year 35. The opportunity to replant will bring new choices on species to perpetuate the wood.
