Full Description: An opportunity to acquire a manageable sized part of an ancient woodland located close to the attractive village of Wickham Bishops.
Parish Wood is a delightful mixed and mature woodland, where oak, ash, beech and horse chestnut are offset by a scattering of pine trees and other conifers. The gently sloping, well-drained terrain, give a sense of both space and intimacy. Here you might spot some of the thirty species of bird types that have been recorded in the wood, or perhaps a small muntjac deer, a fox, signs of badgers, or the trails of ever-busy wood ants.
Bluebells create a haze of colour in spring. In the past, hornbeam and sweet chestnut have been successfully coppiced here. Three sides of the wood’s rectangular ground-plan are bounded by private woodland, while the northern edge looks out over open farmland. The access track is good and passes through private woodland, and Parish Wood is conveniently located - just ten minutes from the A12 and 30 miles from the M25.
Because the woodland is special, it has a tree preservation order on it. This does not prevent good woodland and conservation management on which the owner can get free advice from the Forestry Commission.
