Full Description: Thornley Beck is a delightful woodland containing mixed broadleaves including oak and chestnut, and conifers including Douglas fir, hybrid larch, Sitka spruce and Norway spruce planted in 1973. It has the intensive nature-rich edge effects associated with long narrow woods and abounds with wild flowers, notably orchids, wild garlic and bluebells.
The beck and its species-rich margins flows from end to end, a continuous feature of wildlife interest with small waterfalls and pools.
The woodland is scheduled as Ancient semi-natural and management could be under a continuous cover regime. Thinning and selective felling would encourage natural regeneration of ash.
Grants under the English Woodland Grant Scheme for restocking with native broadleaves can be up to £1,760 per hectare. Full details are available from the Forestry Commission website www.forestry.gov.uk. The wood is Certified, proof of its sustainable
credentials. It will yield moderate amounts of timber but the main attractions are its rarity to the market and potential for enjoyment of ownership.
