Self-Building a Dream Home = 110 Metre Hurdle Race

You could liken the process of self-building a dream home to a 110 metre hurdle race. Except that typically self-building is not a sprint.

You start the race and just as you’ve got into your stride you come across a hurdle – you’ve got to find land. That hurdle cleared and you’re making good progress and then there’s another hurdle, this time the planning permission. This goes on until you eventually cross the line or the threshold in the case of your dream home. Some hurdles are easier to jump than others, this might be the result of timing your approach perfectly or because in your enthusiasm for the race you’re full of energy.

PottonBy using a package company such as Kingspan Potton you’re not removing hurdles but you are enlisting the help of a friend to jump the hurdles with or for you.

So, how does Kingspan Potton do this?

Kingspan Potton has thousands of designs in its archives and publishes comfortably over a hundred of the most popular in their literature. These aren’t hard and fast designs though, you will almost certainly want to personalise the design and make it better suit the way you live and your aspirations. You also get to choose the items that make the home personal to you; fixtures & fittings, carpentry, external claddings etc…

Design hurdle cleared, Kingspan Potton can help with planning permission, building regulations, Code for Sustainable Homes, and they even provide information on project management and issue you with a trade card so you can get valuable discounts on the purchase of materials for the build.

What if you don’t know if you want to take part in the race? Well that’s okay too. Kingspan Potton offers a free self-build workshop and forum where they introduce the self-build process, the opportunities, and the pitfalls and generally offer some sound advice. The workshop concludes with a tour of the factory where their customers’ dream homes are manufactured. Then just a short drive away is the Potton Self-build Show Centre in St Neots where you can have a nose around three stunning examples of Potton houses. Normally at the show centre for these days are a number of experts who can be consulted on matters from planning to finance. Kingspan Potton’s self-build experts will also be on hand to assist.
