In this weeks papers I came across a very interesting article offering one lucky (or possibly unlucky) person the chance to buy 13,000sq m Castle in Gyula (200km from Budapest) for only 0.3pence or one Hungarian forint. Not only is the property a Castle but its also famous as the former owner Count Laszlo Almasy become a central character in the Oscar winning film The English Patient.
This rather inexpensive property does come with a catch or maybe we should say over 1million catches. Basically the Major of Perjesi wants the buyer to commit the equivalent of £1million to the restoration of the building which has been sitting empty for over a decade. The building was originally constructed in 1725 but then rebuild following a fire 1801.
In case you’re not completely sold on the idea of investing £1million into this project bear in mind that the region is known for its sausage festivals and offers a direct train to Transylvania!
